How does natalie make
thread
 portraits?

First, I print a blown up image of the portrait I am using, and tape it down to a piece of wood. Then using the image, I lightly tap holes into the wood to create a general outline of the portrait. Next I remove the picture from the wood, and fill in all of the holes with nails. I then take thread and tightly wrap it back and forth around the nails, creating different values based on the density of how many times I wrap it. It can be complicated, but it is a process that I’ve perfected over many years of making them.
